An 80% gastric reduction of its capacity is performed.  The stomach capacity becomes around 80 ml. The stomach will have a tubular form, shaped as a banana. It is a relatively simple and reproducible restrictive surgery. Nowadays this type of surgery is the most commonly performed bariatric surgery in the world.

History

The gastric sleeve was developed as an intermediate surgery for super-obese patients. Throughout time we verified that most of the patients were losing enough weight and that they were recovering from their illnesses without a second surgery.
