Do I have to control the portion size of the food after the surgery?
Yes, it is important. The portion size of the food has to be reduced in at least 50%, and increase the number of intakes to 5 or 6 throughout the day.
Will I be able to eat anything after having a bariatric surgery?
Yes, you will be able to eat a wide variety of food but with some restrictions. Basically, you should avoid food rich in added sugars and saturated fats. For example, you should avoid sweetened soft drinks, bakery and ultra-processed food. The aim is to achieve a healthy diet based on white meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, whole grains, dairy and fruits.
Will I gain back the weight if I don’t change my life habits?
Yes, that could happen. In fact, studies show that many obese operated patients who do not change their life habits in relation to diet and exercise, regain some of the lost weight over time. Most of the patients will need at least vitamin supplement. After the surgery, there is an anatomical change with the consequent alteration in the absorption of some foods. What habits will I have to change after a bariatric surgery?
It depends on the type of surgery performed. In any case, one should always strive to acquire healthier eating and exercise habits.
Regarding food, the number of meals should be increased throughout the day, and food like eggs, fish, lean meat, dairy products and vegetables should be prioritized. Sugared beverages, industrial bakery and ultra-processed food should be avoided.
Regarding physical activity, one should strive to achieve a weekly exercise routine (300 min/week). The important thing is to adapt physical exercise to the personal circumstances.
Can I replace lunch and dinner for just a piece of fruit?
It would not be convenient. The fruit is a very rich food in vitamins, minerals and sugars; however, it does not contain proteins, which is the most important macronutrient for a patient undergoing bariatric surgery. That is why we recommend including in every meal at least a portion of high-protein foods.
Which nutrient is essential for my nutrition after surgery?

Is the post surgery diet compatible with everyday working life?
Yes, it is completely compatible.
